Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
The faculty of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
invites students to join with them in a demanding and rewarding journey
in liberal learning. What is liberal
learning? Historian William Cronon of the University of Wisconsin
notes that the word "liberal" suggests in its etymology both freedom and
growth. An education
in the College prepares students for a lifetime of curiosity, inquiry,
reflection, intellectual growth and ethical citizenship in a free, democratic
society.
In addition to study in its liberal learning core, students will be expected to develop expertise in a specific discipline through coursework, independent inquiry and mentored research. Details are available in the university catalog. CNU's faculty and advisers welcome the opportunity to meet with students to discuss the ideal and practical consequences of choosing a particular major and to plan a course of study leading to a baccalaureate degree and opportunities for post-graduate study. Christopher Newport University is a community of honor and is governed by principles set forth in The Honor System.
The College promotes undergraduate research; provides a multidisciplinary
program; supports international studies.
It also provides the opportunity for advanced study through academic scholarships, internships, and the Honors Program.
